Maximizing Timberland Potential: A Guide for Landowners

By Mick Schmitt

Farmers National Company - Forestry Division assists landowners in making their timberland as productive as possible.

In our initial meeting with a prospective client, we discuss the desires and goals of the landowner and their vision for their timberland. Some landowners would like to continue the cycle of growing, harvesting and replanting their timberland, as a perpetual investment; while others may be interested in converting from timberland to pastureland, or vice versa. FNC Forestry guides landowners through the necessary steps to achieve their goals.

Once the goals and vision have been determined, we inspect the property and write a plan for the landowner to review with our recommendations for their particular property. In this plan, we detail the direction that we believe will need to be taken, with landowner approval, to meet the desired result. We not only provide a plan, with an aerial photo of the property, we also provide vital information regarding soil types and terrain of the property, in order to reach the most potential for their timberland. We outline any areas that may need special attention, such as any boundary line issues, Streamside Management Zones (SMZ) or any hardwood areas that may need to be harvested or managed.

In the case of a pine plantation, we will recommend that there be a first thinning of the pine stand beginning with the trees that are no less than 15 years of age. After that first thinning, there would be additional thinnings at age 20 and again at age 25, with final harvest being at age 30. After the final harvest, we will work with the landowner and prepare to replant the tract with pine seedlings. This will begin the process of growth to age 15 and the harvesting cycle would continue as a perpetual investment not only for that landowner, but for future generations to enjoy.

At FNC Forestry we take special care to meet the goals of the landowner with integrity and care for our natural resources. Contact us today to schedule your initial consultation.
